The 2023 K6 Czech Ultramarathon Festival delivered an exciting 6-day race with an international field pushing the limits of their endurance. Read Martin Liška’s report on David Kellner’s hard-fought victory and some of the performances that defined the event.
In the last week of April, the second edition of the K6 Czech Ultramarathon Festival took place in the spa town of Konstantinovy Lázně in the Czech Republic. 25 runners from six countries started in the 6-day race. Among them was the experienced ultramarathoner Kobi Oren from Israel, Aldo Maranzina from Italy and almost seventy-nine-year-old Edda Bauer from Germany. She finished a 6-day race in France on Friday, drove a car for 1,200 kilometres, and on Saturday started the next 6-day race with a slight delay. Admirable perseverance of this woman.
This race was also the National Championship, so in addition to last year’s winner Daniel Brázdil, several runners took part for the first time in the six-day race. David Kellner, who is an OCR world champion and a successful Ultra Spartan Race competitor, entered the race with the highest ambitions.
Unfortunately, Kobi Oren withdrew after the first day due to health issues. However, the race was exciting until the last day. In his first participation in the six-day race, Ádám Pék from Hungary showed an excellent performance. On the fourth and fifth day, the difference between David Kellner and Ádám Pék was minimal.
On the last night, David Kellner significantly reduced his rest time and created a decisive lead. He won with a performance of 736.292 km. Ádám Pék from Hungary took second place in the national record of 702.205km in the M50 category. The third Daniel Brázdil ran 665.114 km.
David Kellner is likely to feature at the GOMU 48 hours World Championship in Gloucester in August. He has never run a 48 hour race… But he knows how to prepare for any race… You can find out what kind of sport he did before the ultramarathon in the following interview he gave us before the start of the K6 race.
